Born Jerome Silberman on June 11, 1933 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and then professionally known as Gene Wilder. At the age of 8, Wilder began acting after his mother was diagnosed with rheumatic fever and the doctor suggested him to “try and make her laugh”. He then often made several comedic act for his mother. Wilder became a graduate of Washington High School in Milwaukee in 1951. As a young Wilder, he served in the U.S. Army for two years, and then worked odd jobs to support his acting career.
Wilder started his career on stage, and made his screen debut in 1961’s television series The Play of the Week. However, his first film role was a hostage in a 1967 motion picture Bonnie and Clyde. Wilder got his big break when he was cast for the 1968 film The Producer for which he nominated for an Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor. This was the first time Wilder collaborated with writer/director Mel Brooks, and then the pair also worked together in 1974’s Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. Wilder was widely recognized as one of the Mel Brooks’ favorite actor to cast.
Throughout his career, Wilder is best known for portraying of Willy Winka in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory in 1971. Wilder starred in four films together with comedian Richard Pryor: Silver Streak (1976), Stir Crazy (1980), See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989) and Another You (1991). He has also appeared in directing and writing own films including, The Woman in Red (1984). In 2003, Wilder made a guest appearance on Will & Grace for which he received an Emmy Awards for Outstanding Guest Actor.
In addition to his acting success, Wilder also worked as a novelist, writing several novels and a memoir. On March 1, 2005, Wilder published his personal memoir Kiss Me Like a Stranger: My Search for Love & Art.
On Aug. 29, 2016, Wilder diet at the age of 83 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He left one daughter, Katharine Wilder from his married with Mary Joan Schutz.
